Thought provoking reflection: ten sections of questions to go deeper.
Workbook: thought provoking reflection
Take 10 to 15 minutes. Be honest, specific, and nonjudgmental. The goal is awareness, not criticizing yourself. Pick one section, or work through them all.
1. Victories and progress
- What were my victories today, big or small?
- What did I handle better than I would have in the past?
- What am I proud of myself for?
- Did I take one step toward an important goal?
- When did I choose a healthier response instead of my old pattern?
- What did I learn about my own strength today?
2. Challenges and struggles
- What did I struggle with today?
- What situation felt the most difficult?
- What thoughts kept repeating in my mind?
- Did I experience fear, anxiety, anger, frustration, sadness, or self doubt?
- Did I avoid something that I knew I needed to face?
- What did I need in that moment: support, rest, reassurance, space, or action?
- What could I try differently if this happens again?
3. Triggers
- What triggered me today?
- Be specific: was it traffic, a coworker, criticism, money, being ignored, uncertainty, loneliness, or my mind wandering?
- What exactly happened?
- What was my immediate thought?
- What emotion did that thought create?
- Where did I feel the reaction in my body?
- Did the situation remind me of something from my past?
- Was I reacting to what actually happened, or to the story my mind created?
- How long did I remain emotionally stuck?
- What helped me return to the present moment?
- How would the calmer, more aware version of me respond next time?
4. Thoughts and awareness
- What thought occupied most of my attention today?
- Was I living primarily in the past, the future, or the present?
- Which thoughts were facts, and which were assumptions or worst case scenarios?
- Did I remember that I am the awareness observing my thoughts, not the thoughts themselves?
- When did I catch my mind spiraling?
- Did I pause, breathe, say "CHANGE," move physically, and redirect my attention?
- What thought or story am I ready to stop feeding?
- What would I rather focus my attention on?
5. Emotions and the body
- How did I feel emotionally when I woke up?
- How do I feel right now?
- When did I feel most peaceful or energized?
- When did I feel tense, drained, or overwhelmed?
- What was my body trying to tell me today?
- Did I give myself enough sleep, movement, healthy food, water, and quiet time?
- What helped regulate and calm my nervous system?
6. Gratitude
- What are three specific things I am grateful for today?
- Who made a positive difference in my day?
- What ordinary moment did I appreciate?
- What challenge might contain a lesson or opportunity?
- What do I have today that I once hoped or prayed for?
- What is something about myself that I am grateful for?
- Can I feel gratitude in my body instead of only thinking about it?
7. Relationships and communication
- How did I show up for the people around me?
- Did I listen carefully or mainly wait for my turn to speak?
- Was I patient, honest, compassionate, and respectful?
- Did I take something personally?
- Is there a conversation I am avoiding?
- Do I owe anyone an apology, acknowledgment, or thank you?
- Did I protect my boundaries where necessary?
- Who could I encourage or support tomorrow?
8. Personal responsibility
- What was within my control today?
- What was outside my control?
- Where did I blame another person or circumstance for how I felt?
- What part of my reaction can I take responsibility for?
- Did my choices reflect the person I want to become?
- What excuse did I make today?
- What is one decision I can make differently tomorrow?
9. Becoming the future version of myself
- Who was I being today?
- Did I think, act, and feel like my old self or my future self?
- What old habit or emotional pattern appeared?
- What would the best version of me have done?
- What quality do I want to practice tomorrow: presence, confidence, courage, patience, discipline, or compassion?
- What is one small action I can take tomorrow to become that person?
- How do I want to feel when I wake up?
10. Closing the day
- What is the most important lesson I learned today?
- What do I want to release before going to sleep?
- Is there anything I need to forgive myself or someone else for?
- What unfinished concern can I write down and leave here for tonight?
- What is my main intention for tomorrow?
- What is one thing I am looking forward to?
End with
Today is complete. I acknowledge my progress, learn from my challenges, and release what I cannot change tonight. Tomorrow is another opportunity to choose who I want to become.
